First Lady urges Kenyans to register with NHIF

irst Lady Margaret Kenyatta has urged all Kenyans to register with the National Hospital Insurance Fund for better healthcare. She said registering with the scheme will reduce the burden of hospital care on families. The First Lady made the plea when she donated medical supplies and equipment to Bungoma Referral Hospital. The hospital has served the residents of Bungoma and neighbouring regions for over 65 years.

Uhuru pushes for urban poor to benefit from Equalisation Fund

President Uhuru Kenyatta has pitched for the inclusion of the urban poor so that they could benefit from the Equalisation Fund like other marginalised communities in the rural areas. The President said the urban poor – mainly those in informal settlements – lived in precarious conditions and also needed to be accorded equal consideration as other marginalised communities in the rural areas. The Equalisation Fund seeks to provide services in accordance to what the communities identified as their priorities and which include health, education, infrastructure, energy and water.

Ruto slams politicians calling for a referendum

Deputy President William Ruto says a recent clamour for constitutional change was being fronted by politicians who had failed to win last year’s elections. Speaking at the 3rd Annual Legislative Summit in Mombasa on Tuesday claimed that it is “lazy people who don’t want to work hard and incompetent people who cannot formulate any meaningful development programmes, and some who lose elections” who use the Constitution to further their personal agendas. The Deputy President said leaders should instead focus on how to improve the livelihoods of the people they serve.

Kenya Revenue Authority gives owners of illegally imported vehicles 30 days to make things right

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intercepted 21 illegally imported vehicles valued at Ksh30 million and bearing foreign registration numbers. The vehicles will be crushed if found to be over eight-years-old. The Authority said the owners have 30 days to produce necessary documents before the vehicles are destroyed.

Public Accounts Committee faults Nairobi County for losing Ksh1 billion a year to corrupt parking attendants.

The Nairobi Public Accounts Committee (PAC), a county assembly watchdog, says that City Hall continues to lose over Ksh1.2 billion in street parking revenue annually through unaccounted for clamps and collusion among parking attendants. The Committee  revealed that the county government raised slightly over Ksh2 billion in parking fees against a potential of over Ksh3.3 billion. The report for the year ended June 2016 shows only  an estimated 1.3 million vehicles paid parking fees against 2.1 million vehicles at the designated on-street parking lots in the city.

National Housing Corporation starts construction of 500,000 new units

The National Housing Corporation (NHC) has rolled out a housing project targeting to construct over 500,000 new housing units spread across the country. The first phase of the project was unveiled yesterday in Nairobi and Machakos Counties where the corporation has just completed 222 new housing units. The units are part of the corporations’ strategic plan of delivering decent and affordable housing. Speaking during a tour of the housing project, NHC Chairman Architect Francis Gitau Mungai said the Corporation is committed to the creation of 500,000 new homeowners through the facilitation of affordable housing to Kenyans.

England squad hold first training session

England boss Gareth Southgate has held his first full training session with his squad ahead of the World Cup. The majority of his 23-man squad arrived at St George’s Park on Monday as England began their training camp for Russia. Dele Alli and newly-announced captain Harry Kane were among those who took part in the training session on Tuesday.

Juventus target Paul Pogba and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Manager Massimiliano Allegri is reportedly keen to bring Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Juventus. Alternatively, the Italian side may look to bring Paul Pogba back to Turin. It has also emerged that  Juventus could target Paul Pogba this season

England Striker, Marcus Rashford pays tribute to Manchester Arena victims

England striker Marcus Rashford has penned a tribute to his home city of Manchester on the anniversary of the Arena bombing. Twenty-two people were killed in a terror attack following an Ariana Grande concert with Manchester’s two professional clubs adopting the tagline ‘a city united’ in the wake of the atrocity. The United striker, from Wythenshawe in the south of the city, reflected on his love for the city and called for unity on his club’s website.
