Jubilee Women MPs call for arrest of youths behind Kisumu religious meeting attack

By Hillary Mageka

Jubilee women parliamentarians have petitioned Inspector General Joseph Boinnet and Director of Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to take action against perpetrators of violence against women in the run up of the presidential repeat polls.

Led by Laikipia Women Representative Cate Waruguru, the Women MPs said culprits must be brought to book and made to take responsibility of their criminal acts.

The lawmakers cited an incident last week at Jumuia Hotel in Kisumu county where local youths allegedly allied to Raila Odinga attacked women in a religious conference.

"We are reminding politicians in Kenya that a culture of peace requires the participation of women, as women, we will not be intimidated in our efforts towards building peace and restoring hope in Kenya."

She was accompanied by Gatundu North MP Wanjiku Kibe, Women Representatives Wangui Ngirichi (Kirinyaga), Faith Waigwa (Nyandarua), Gathoni wa Muchomba (Kiambu) and Sabina Chege (Muranga).

They said it was depressing that more than a week later, NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his team have  not come out, clear to condemn these crim8inals who attacked innocent women while chanting his name.

Last week on Wednesday, a group of youths stormed the meeting at Jumuia Hotel in Kisumu and dispersed about 150 women participants from Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii and Migori counties.

The youths claimed the meeting was to execute an ID buying scheme to eat into NASA’s votes on October 17.

However, the Raila Odinga-led ODM party has already distanced itself from the attack of women over allegations that they were selling their IDs.
