IEBC assures systems in place for smooth polls despite ICT manager’s death

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says the death of ICT Manager, Chris Msando will not affect preparations for the elections due next week.

In a statement, Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that operations will continue as planned with no risk of compromising the elections, despite the murder of Msando whom he described as the driving force at the Commission’s technology department.

“IEBC has lost. Chris was one of the most educated employees of IEBC in the ICT sector. He was the driving force in the ICT sector but he leaves behind a team at IEBC whom he has trained and will carry on his work,” he stated.

Due to the death of Msando, the Commission also postponed the simulation of the results transmission system, which was to be conducted Monday to Wednesday, 2 August 2017 at 3:00pm.

NASA dismayed by brutal murder of IEBC manager Msando

The National Super Alliance (NASA) on Monday condemned the brutal murder of an election body official terming it an attempt to frustrate the country from holding the General Election slated for next week.

Following the killing of ICT manager Chris Msando, NASA Co-Principal Musalia Mudavadi called on the government to provide security for all IEBC official to ensure they conduct a free, fair and credible elections.

“We also have information that Msando had actually made reports particularly at the Central Police Station indicating that his life was in danger.,” Mudavadi told a news conference.

The Opposition super alliance’s National Campaign Chairman further said the murder of the Msando who had a vital role to play in this election was inhumane.

“That no effort was made to camouflage this killing as an accident shows the determination of the killers to send a chilling message that they will stop at nothing to ensure the outcome they desire,” he said.

ODM supporter wants NASA deal quashed

A man has filed a petition in the High Court seeking to compel the Registrar of Political Parties to deregister NASA agreement over clause limiting Raila Odinga to one term in office.

Mr Reuben Odhiambo Miya, an ODM member, argued that the agreement violates Article 28 and 91 of the Constitution.

Raila Odinga at the ODM Special National Delegates Convention at the Kasarani indoor arena on May 5 where he was endorsed to fly the NASA presidential flag in the August elections

The ODM member argued that the provisions of the agreement seek to curtail and restrict his political rights as guaranteed in the Constitution after NASA principals amended the previous the deal which was filed with the Registrar of Political Parties on February 22 this year

Mr Miya claims that the February 22 deal stipulated that the coalition shall field a presidential candidate and a running mate but it was amended on April 27 after the coalition nominated a presidential candidate.
