Tusker top of the table for the first time as Gor lose to Sofapaka

Defending Kenyan Premier League champions Tusker FC surged to the top of the table for the first time this season despite being held to a barren draw by new boys Kariobangi Sharks at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Tusker moved to the helm on 28 points with joint leaders Gor Mahia suffering a shock  2-0 to Sofapaka at the Kinoru Stadium in Meru, Ezekiel Okare and new boy Timothy Ludda scoring a goal a-piece.

Local giants Gor began life without former manager Jose Marcelo ‘Ze Maria’ Ferreira on a sour note on a day the Brazilian was unveiled as Head Coach for relegated Albanian Premier League side KF Tirana.

Sofapaka delivered the club’s first defeat in five matches, winning 2-0 at the Kinoru Stadium on Sunday to cut the gap between them to four points and granting Tusker FC the chance to go top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) for the first time this season.

Champions Tusker battled to a barren draw away at Kariobangi Sharks but the point was enough to lift them top, one point above Gor, as their seven-match winning streak came to a halt.

Bandari FC versus Western Stima produced the second and only other goalless draw across the KPL with Kakamega Homeboyz and Zoo Kericho sharing the spoils after six-goal epic.

At the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, Ulinzi Stars fought back to earn a 1-1 draw and earn a point against Sony Sugar. Amos Asembeka had put the visitors in front after 22 minutes before Stephen Waruru cancelled it out at the hour mark.

On Saturday, Romanian coach Dorian Marin picked a point on his debut as the AFC Leopards boss as Ingwe was held to a barren, uninspiring draw at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday evening as the Kenyan Premier League resumed from a three-week break.

It wasn’t as competitive and fast paced as had been touted but the point will be a huge one for Mathare head coach Francis Kimanzi who had seen his side go on a five-match losing streak to drop to the foot of the log.

Had they converted their chances, AFC Leopards who have not won over the last seven matches would have given themselves a huge surge on an afternoon they played way below their standards.
