Voter verification kicks off as IEBC gazettes register clean up timelines

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will from today, May 11, 2017 open the voters register for biometric voter verification until June 9, 2017. Speaking to the media at the IEBC head offices in Nairobi, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati announced that 10,000 gadgets have already been distributed countrywide for the exercise which will run parallel with the ongoing audit of the voters register by audit firm, KPMG. While urging Kenyans to verify their particulars, Chebukati indicated that voters will have to verify their details in any polling station within the ward where they intend to vote.

Mombasa residents turn to alternative currency              

‘Currency’ helps residents thrive in hard times.As Kenyans struggle to make ends meet due to the high cost of living, some Mombasa residents have been using an alternative currency to meet their needs since 2013.Some 2,000 residents of Bangladesh, the largest slum in the port city, have been using Bangla-Pesa, a complementary currency printed in Germany that only allows registered members to use.Bangla-Pesa is now being used to pay school fees and funeral expenses, in harambees and as church offerings.

IPOA to monitor police recruitment exercise

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority will monitor Thursday’s recruitment of 10,000 police recruits to ensure it is corruption free. The authority wants the public to call 0741-423-191 and 0786- 824-426 to report any malpractices spotted. These numbers will be operational from 0600hrsto 2200hrs up to Saturday.The authority said professionalism, accountability, and transparency are attributes and practices that have to be inculcated and practiced by all actors from the point of recruitment of an officer all the way to their retirement.
