We are on time to deliver credible polls, IEBC says
  • IEBC exudes confidence that they are well prepared for August poll
  • Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati they are on time and there should no cause of alarm over their preparedness

The electoral commission yesterday maintained that they are ready and on course to deliver a credible poll in August 8.

The commission has allayed fears over its preparedness for the General Elections saying there is sufficient time to get things done within the stipulated timelines.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati assured the public that the commission is within the election timelines to deliver a credible election.

“On many occasions, the commissioners and I have affirmed our resolve to deliver a credible, free and fair general election on August 8 2017.Our first clients are the Kenyan people. We are determined to serve Kenyans and uphold the constitution of Kenya without fear or favor as we declared when we took oath of office,” Chebukati said on Tuesday 28, 2017 during his weekly briefing on election preparedness.

Chebukati at the same time announced that the commission has canceled the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) tender and will put in place alternative measures.

Chebukati said the cancellation would help mitigate against risks that may undermine the entire electoral process and alternative measures to ensure the integrated electronic technology provided for in Elections Laws (Amendment) Act, 2016 is in place by the legal timelines and on time for the May 10 biometric verification process.

“We shall not accept to be held captive by firms or individuals pursuing tender wars to the detriment of credible, free and fair elections,” Chebukati added.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga last week questioned capacity of the electoral commission in conducting a free and fair elections.
