It’s a done deal: Senator Obure picks top Jubilee operative Albert Nyaundi as his running mate for Kisii gubernatorial race

Senator Chris Obure yesterday picked former Ford People National Chairman Albert Nyaundi as his running mate for the Kisii governor’s seat on a Jubilee ticket.

Obure unveiled Nyaundi, a  Nairobi based architect and a Jubilee party operative, raising stakes in the scramble for the Jubilee party ticket in the crucial swing county.

This comes days after Kisii Deputy governor Joash Maangi, initially touted as Obure’s running mate, declared his interest for the Kisii gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee ticket.

Yesterday, Obure dismissed speculations that he had promised to appoint Maangi, a key ally of Deputy president William Ruto, as his running mate.

Observes opine the battle for the Jubilee ticket in the race Kisii gubernatorial seat will be a bruising one considering that Obure is perceived a buddy to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The DP is reportedly behind Maangi’s move. However, Obure said he had consulted widely before settling on Nyaundi.

"I want to clarify that at no time did I make an undertaking or promised that Joash Maangi was to be my running mate. I have never considered Maangi an appropriate running mate"

Obure said.

Maangi is currently the Deputy Governor of Kisii and is closely working with his boss James Ongwae, whose leadership I am critical of, said Obure

Addressing the media in Nairobi, Obure welcome Maangi’s candidature but exuded confidence that he will trounce Deputy Governor at the primaries.

"Maangi’s aspirations are not for the Deputy Governor, we are going to ran against him in nominations. In the remote event that he beats me I will have no option but to support him, "

said the Kisii Senator.

Obure who was elected on an ODM ticket but has since shifted allegiance to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee outfit said he made the decision to pick Nyaundi after wide consultations with local leaders.

"He is in my view and the interest of all the opinion leaders, colleagues and friends I have consulted, the perfect choice,"

he said.
