Isuza named Mathare’s finest

Midfielder Whyvonne Isuza has been named Mathare United’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) as the club recognized their star performers for the 2016 season in an awards ceremony held on Monday.

Isuza also won the Midfielder of the Year award took home a total of KSh80,000 and a personalized trophy, coming barely a week after he finished first runners up in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) FOYA Midfielder of the Year category.

Speaking after the event, Isuza said he was optimistic awarding players will go a long way in motivating them to give their best.

Mane late winner settles Merseyside derby

Sadio Mane’s goal deep into injury time sank Everton and settled a scrappy Merseyside derby in Liverpool’s favour at Goodison Park.

The Reds’ £34m summer signing from Southampton reacted first to a loose ball after substitute Daniel Sturridge’s shot had hit the post in the fourth of eight minutes of stoppage time.

Everton, who had lost goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to injury in the second half, have now won just one of their past 20 meetings with their local rivals.

Liverpool – who moved up to second – created the better chances, with Stekelenburg and his replacement Joel Robles saving well from Roberto Firmino.

Injury concerns for Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso coach Paulo Duarte says he has is not concerned over a number of injuries to key players going into next month’s African Nations Cup finals.

He has named several players with problems in his preliminary 24-man squad, including Charles Kaboré, Préjuce Nakoulma, Jonathan Pitroipa and Bertrand Traoré.

“I am confident they can recover in time,” Duarte insisted.

The squad is due to begin a training camp on 27 December.

Bakary Koné is another player from the 2013 squad that finished as runners-up in South Africa who has an injury concern.
