Health workers strike kicks off

Doctors and nurses ares set to begin a nationwide strike after a failed scheduled meeting last evening where one party failed to show up.

In a press conference last night, Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu said the ministry was scheduled to meet union officials yesterday but they did not show up. According to Mailu, the strike notice by Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) and Kenya Medical Practitioners and Pharmacists Union (KMPDU) was premature as the 90 days a court had given medics and the State to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement had not yet elapsed.

Trump rants against China in Twitter outburst

US President-elect Donald Trump has posted a series of tweets criticising China for its monetary policy and its operations in the South China Sea.

“Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency” and “build a massive military complex?” he asked. “I don’t think so!”

Last week Mr Trump risked a diplomatic rift with China by speaking directly with Taiwan’s president.

The highly unusual move saw China lodge a complaint with the US.

The US has previously criticised China’s yuan devaluation, saying it unfairly favours Chinese exporters.

It has also told Beijing to stop reclaiming land around islands and reefs which are claimed by multiple countries in the South China Sea, and has sent US Navy ships to the area. Both sides have accused each other of “militarising” the region.

China has said its land reclamation efforts are for civilian purposes.

Female police officer shot dead by colleague in Tharaka Nithi

A Police officer over the weekend shot dead his wife in Tharaka Nithi, the latest of such incidents involving law enforcement officers in the country. The officer identified as Collins Wafula of Marimanti Police station is reported to have opened fire on Grace Opiyo who was also a police officer at the same station.

Tharaka Nithi South Police chief Dominic Mukoma told journalists that the two had been living as a couple and only differed at the report office last night.

“We are investigating to find out what happened because these are people who were cohabiting,” he said.
He said they are investigating to establish what led to the shooting as they plan to charge the accused who was disarmed and locked up.
