New Act

Women in Music is a periodic event that provides a platform for young women in the performing arts to hone their craft through live shows hosted by the Goethe Institut. Each concert series features female artistes providing an acoustic performance of their music. The purpose of the event is to ‘link upcoming female acts with established musicians for mentorship and encourage cross-genre musical collaborations between female musicians in order to propagate the values of unity, cooperation and solidarity in larger society.’ The most recent edition of the event had a number of shining new starts in the midst. Here’s some of the names to watch out for:

Liron

A Kenyan soul singer songwriter who got her introduction into the music industry with her debut album ‘Prodigal’s Diary.’ The album consists of12 tracks which blends elements of soul, jazz, blues, folk and traditional African music. After gaining critical acclaim and positive reviews she earned 2 nominations for the 2015 AFRIMA Awards in the categories of Most Promising Artist in Africa and Best Soul and RnB Artist in Africa. These are not the only accolades the album received, Liron’s work has earned her a 2015 KALASHA nomination for Best Original Score for the motion picture ‘Auditions’ including a win for same song titled ‘Weapons’ under the 48 Hour Film Project in 2014 for Best Original Score.

Ythera

Singer/songwriter Ythera has a unique sound that she terms as ‘Soul Afro Funk.’ She takes her inspiration from multiple genres in order to cultivate the sound that is her very own Afro Fusion, Jazz, RnB, Funk and Neo Soul all have snippets in her music. Ythera’s eclectic, vocally skillful and soulful, heavy on the bass, groovy sound is a sure fire way that she wins her audiences hearts and ears in stages all over Nairobi. She has performed at Blankets & Wine, her alma mater United States International University (USIU), Sauti Academy, Dusit Hotel and at numerous events at Michael Joseph Centre. She has featured twice as a session background vocalist in Coke Studio Season 2 and 3. Her debut solo concert labelled ‘Awake’ held in 2015 served as her preface to the industry and showcased her musical journey. Her music deals with love, politics and everything in between. Some of her singles include ‘Kijana’, ‘Ahadi’, ‘Like the Phoenix’ and ‘Let Us all Rise.’
