Warning of delays on Ngong Rd over trade fair, construction

Motorists are being urged to avoid Ngong Road due to the expected traffic snarl up as a result of the 14th edition of the Nairobi International Trade Fair that is ongoing.

Nairobi Traffic Commandant Leonard Katana said that the event coupled with the road construction currently underway may inconvenience motorists.

“We expect huge traffic along Ngong Road due to the ongoing Nairobi Show. Again we know that construction of the road is currently ongoing with contractors on site,” he cautioned.

He encouraged motorists to use alternative routes to reach their destinations.

“We urge motorists to avoid using Ngong road as much as possible to avoid being inconvenienced. They can use alternative routes like Argwings Kodhek and even the bypass to get to their destinations,” he said.

Security has been beefed up at Jamhuri Park, the venue of the fair set to conclude this coming Sunday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to officially open the show on Friday.

Killer ‘Ambulance’ charged with causing death

The driver of the Ongata Rongai route commuter matatu that killed five people in an accident on Langata Road more than a week ago was on Monday, October 3 charged in court with five counts over the crash.

Francis Mukuria, also known as “Ambulance”, was charged with causing death of five people by dangerous driving, driving without a license, failing to report the crash, driving an un-roadworthy vehicle and causing injuries to passengers.

The driver, who was appearing before Kibra Principal Magistrate, Barbra Ojoo, had gone into hiding immediately after the accident that also left scores injured resulting in the cancellation of Ongata Line Matatu Sacco license by NTSA only for him to surrender to the police Sunday, October 2.

His advocate, however, pleaded with the court to release him on bond or bail terms on the basis that he has a young family and he is the soul breadwinner.

The advocate explained to court that ‘Ambulance’ was forced to hideout as the angry onlookers would have lynched him.

Prosecution opposed to his release and the court has remanded him in police custody until Tuesday, October 4 when the ruling on whether he will be released on bond or bail will be made.

Fifa president wants 48-team World Cup

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has proposed expanding the World Cup finals to a 48-team tournament – a larger number than his election promise.

The Italian suggested 16 of those teams would be eliminated after one knockout match – before the group stages.

The rest of the tournament would be the same as it is now, with 32 teams competing in group stages followed by knockout rounds.

One of his election promises was to expand the finals to 40 teams.

Infantino said a decision would be taken by the governing body’s council in January.
