A bright new day: Celebrities who said goodbye to the secular world

Collins Majale got married earlier this month and if that wasn’t big news on its own, the former bad boy rapper has reportedly turned his life over to God and was now living life on the straight and narrow.

It was a sight to behold and the news had to be verified a few times over for it to finally sink in. Collo had gotten saved. His absence at the hit concert The Plot was an indication that something had changed. Despite an Ogopa DJs reunion taking place at the gig, former band member Nyashinski performed the Kleptomaniax smash hit ‘Tuendelee’ as a solo act.

Although many have doubted the validity of Collo’s salivation and some even labelling it a publicity stunt, the rapper maintains he is indeed a new man. In a statement to a local daily he said as much, “I am not here to reason, defend or even justify myself. I am being me, Collo. The saved and married Collo.”

It is not a new occurrence that a secular artiste turns a new leaf. One of the newest converts happens to be former secular rapper Bobby Mapesa. The emcee who had gained notoriety for using vulgar lines and explicit metaphors in his music, received the Lord into his heart after attending church following an 11-year nonappearance. The rapper has even started churning out hits as a new and improved Bobby Mapesa, with the minimalist ‘Nisamehe’ getting thousands of views online.

One of the biggest triumphs to come out of this movement has to be singer Size 8. The musician who had been known for her ridiculously energetic if a little manic performances got saved a few years ago and has never looked back. She is now a married mother enjoying success as an artiste and fame as the wife of celebrity gospel deejay Sammy Muraya aka DJ Mo.

Yet still it’s never an easy road to walk. East Africa’s ‘Number One Hypeman’, Davidson Ngibuini aka DNG started out as a secular rapper who then turned his life around and had a fair amount of success in the gospel scene before going back to the secular world. And after then getting saved a few years ago, it’s a little hard to determine where his standing is at present.

Rapper DNA has also had an entanglement with gospel music. After battling alcohol addiction the hit-maker admitted on a popular radio show that he had fallen back into the habit.

We can only hope for the best as Collo embarks on this new journey.
