Slain Recce squad commando wedded only a month ago

The Recce squad soldier who was killed in a rescue mission in Kapenguria yesterday has left behind a widow whom he wedded just last month.

Mr Dennis Momanyi was among 20 Recce commandos flown from Nairobi to neutralize a rogue police officer who had attacked the Kapenguria Police Station in West Pokot County yesterday.

The Recce Company (Ruiru) where he was based is now mourning one of their members.

Dennis had just wedded his wife last month and was still in honeymoon mood when he was flown to Kapenguria for the rescue mission.

He unfortunately died during the two-hour operation.

“Rest In Peace (RIP) officer Dennis Momanyi of Recce Coy Ruiru. It was just the other month that you got married and now you are no more. You have left us too soon but may your soul rest in peace. Our condolences to your wife and family, we will never forget you and the ultimate sacrifice you made,” read a post on Facebook by Recce Squad.

The group littered their page with pictures of the slain officer and his wife during their wedding ceremony.

Officers who had earlier responded to the attack were unable to neutralise the attacker hence the need to send the elite Recce commandos.

They landed at Makutano Primary School, some three kilometers away from the scene, at 12noon, and walked to the police station after a brief strategy meeting.

At about 1:15pm, two loud blasts were heard at the station followed by a fierce exchange of fire in which the slain commando is believed to have been killed.

The attacker, also a police officer stationed in Kapenguria, was also shot dead and the operation declared ended at about 2pm.

In total, seven policemen including Officer Commanding Kapenguria Police Station Vitalis Ochido, three corporals and two constables were killed in the early morning attack.

The officers who died include Wilson Karani, Katana Kitu, Gideon Ochieng, Robert Kinyua and Cornelius Rono all of Kapenguria police station and Dennis Momanyi, who was part of the Recce Company flown in from Ruiru yesterday.
