The roast of Jimmy Gait

Gospel musician Jimmy Gait is on a mission to turn himself into a punchline of epic proportions. Last year, after singer Dela released a masterful cover of the hit Adele song, ‘Hello’ Jimmy Gait thought it only fitting that he does the same. But with a twist of course.

Dela’s song was praised by critics and the public alike. It was nothing short of a triumph, Jimmy Gait’s song on the other hand was an endeavor that should never have been attempted. It was over produced, it was mildly and inadvertently comical and it missed the mark. The video too might have been a little more subtle in its approach.

Needless to say, Jimmy got roasted to high heaven. KOT had a field day with him, with some memorable quotes such as ‘When you think Kenya is headed on the right track then Jimmy Gait releases a Hello Cover’ and this explanation to the original artiste ‘Dear Adele, we are sorry for Jimmy Gait’s cover of Hello. We sincerely apologize. No Kenyan was consulted!

With all that roasting we hoped Jimmy Gait would crawl back into his hidey-hole but how wrong we all were, he is back and this time with a sponsor!

The idea for ‘Yesu Ndie Sponsor’ started out as a joke. Internet funny man Steve Muriuki made it gain more attention than it was worth because it should have stayed a joke. Jimmy Gait on the other hand had other ideas and decided to capitalize on it.

The song tells the story that the only thing to truly depend on in life is God. Which is a solid message.

The song (video too come soon, or not) follows that same formulae as the ‘Hello’ cover. It’s loud, out of tune and heavy on the synthesizers, seemingly making up for Jimmy Gait’s voice. Even the producer must have known to cut some corners.

Naturally Jimmy’s roasting commenced in full swing. The hashtag #LyricsZaJimmyGait became our #Brexit and now we wait with bated breath for him to release a song on the issue.

But industry insiders have a different point of view. Jimmy Gait is a smart artiste, he knows how to remain relevant, he knows this will go viral and aren’t we all fixated on ‘Sponsor?’
