It is Kidero and Sonko beef season again

If Kenyan politics as it stands right now was a reality TV show, it would be a big hit. Our politicians might be accused of being many things but the one thing they will never not be is entertaining.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Senator Mike Sonko almost traded blows yesterday morning following an exchange of words. Flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has never been one to backtrack on his words and this might be reason he enjoys such a high level of popularity in the country, and it was not as shocking as it might seem when he called Evans Kidero a murderer.

In a clip currently enjoying massive internet rounds, the build up to the moment occurs when Senator Sonko and Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are are in a disagreement about Governor Kidero illegally acquiring land. During the Senate Public Accounts Committee morning session Kennedy Mong’are refutes Sonko’s claims and basically says they have no basis.

Sonko becomes increasingly incensed and says that he has written to the Director of Criminal Investigation about the matter while simultaneously telling off Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o when he tries to calm him down. The real action starts when Kidero finally decides to respond to Sonko’s accusations.

We have seen lawmakers in other countries get involved in fisticuffs before and our own Parliament is no exception. In December 2014 an especially shameful fight broke out among members of the National Assembly when a controversial terror bill aiming to crack down on terror suspects was passed. The brawl made international headlines as MPs pushed and pulled, order papers were torn, books were hurled and Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso was splashed with water.

Every year it seems there has to be some shameful fight that our leaders get into. Decorum it seems has been thrown through the window. Where Sonko and Kidero are concerned there is no love lost, their love hate relationship has hit another crescendo. We doubt this beef season will end soon. So much for a better city and a better life!
