Should men cry?

It’s tricky trying to figure this one out. Men are hard wired or at least expected to be the strong silent type. Anything else and their masculinity comes into question. But are there times, when shedding a manly tear becomes permissible and if so would you cry in front of your girlfriend?

Of course situations differ and one thing that might make a person cry like a baby might not make another man break down in the same way. On the vault of knowledge that is the internet, consensus seems to be that there are only a few times that a man is allowed to cry in front of a woman he is in a relationship with. Note that, ‘in a relationship’ are the key words, a man is apparently not allowed to cry in the presence of a woman he has just started dating. There are some exceptions; if a family member or your best friend dies, if your dog dies and when your wife gives birth to your child and that’s about where the list ends!

Even though women can claim to receive a lot more pressure from the opposite sex in numerous aspects of social life, this is one instance where the men have hit a wall.

It’s easy to say that ‘men should cry more’ and that repressing feelings is a bad idea but it seems that the second a man decides to let his guard down his whole impression on the woman the he is seeing might completely change. Some wives might have been married to their husbands for decades and have never seen them shed a tear once just because of this reason.

Is this is some sort of indication that deep down all women really crave is an alpha male?

But think about it if your man comes to you sobbing about a fight, losing a job or any reason not listed above would you suddenly feel some great loss of respect for him?

A man would so much rather keep all his negative feelings inside and go release them to his friends (preferably drunk) than show some vulnerability in front of the person he is supposed to spend the rest of his life with. It’s strange that men, who are accused of being insensitive and unfeeling would much faster accommodate another man in despair than a woman would.
